There are a couple dozens of species of Selenicereus in Central America and the Caribbean Basin. They have slender ribbed stems, up to 1 inch in diameter (2.5 cm) with short spines, 0.5 inches (1.2 cm) at most, but generally much shorter. The name Selenicereus comes from the Greek for 'moon cereus', and refers that the flowers open at night.

The large, occasionally up to 12 inches (30 cm), funnel-shaped flowers are mostly white with some yellow. Most are sweetly scented. They open at night. They are followed by fruits that can reach 4 inches in diameter (10 cm).

Selenicereus are propagated easily by seeds or cuttings. They can be watered and grow all year, but can't take any frost. They are occasionally used as rootstock for grafting other species.
Large nocturnal flower, spiny tube.
