| Home Page | The genus Rathbunia is now part of Stenocereus. It was containing 4 species from northwestern Mexico. They make dense thicket of semy erect stems, sometimes reaching over 8 feet high (2.5 m). The genus is named after Robert Rathbun. Rathbunias are easy to grow from cuttings or seeds. They are fairly tolerant of soil qualities, but here in Arizona, enjoy generous watering in summer. They will take some frost in winter.
The red tubular flowers open during the day. They are followed by spiny red spherical fruits, generally less than 0.5 inches (1.2 cm) in diameter.
