The epithet 'discolor' comes from the Latin for 'two different colours'.

Blooming Habits:
Large bell-shaped, deep pink or pale red flowers, 1.6 to 2 inches long (4-5 cm), with a tomentose calyx, in early summer.

Fruiting Habits:
Rusty, densely pubescent seed capsules, 3.2 to 4 inches long (8-10 cm), which contain many large seeds. The capsule contains irritant, glochid-like, hairs and should by handled wearing gloves.
