Euphorbia milii was named after M. le baron Milius, the Governor of then Ile Bourbon (now Mauritius island).
Although this variety is seldom seen, it is one of the wild varieties with the largest red bracts. Its cultivar 'Breon' occasionally offered as Euphorbia breonii is one of the most desirable. Along with Euphorbia lophogona, it is in the parentage of most large flowered hybrid "crown of thorns".
