Origin: Eastern Brazil (southern central Bahia state)

Growth Habits: Solitary, globose to cylindrical, up to 14 inches tall (35 cm), 10 inches in diameter (25 cm)

The Melocactus deinacanthus has 10-12 ribs. It is often considered as a synonym of Melocactus ernestii, but the CITES Checklist (2001) considers it a valid endangered species.
