Growth Habits: Group of slender columns branching from the base, erect or semi-prostrate, up to 20 feet (1.8 to 6 m), 6 to 8 cm in diameter; 6 to 10 or more ribs; 1 or more central spines, 1.6 inches (4 cm) long; 10 to 12 radials, 0.3 to 0.6 inch (0.7 to 1.5 cm) long;

Watering Needs: Water generously during the summer.

Blooming Habits:
The column flowers blossom freely in cultivation (the first picture was taken mid-June in Phoenix). The red flowers are up to 3 inches long (8 cm), 0.6 inch (1.5 cm) in diameter, and come in summer. They are followed by spiny fruits 1.4 to 1.6 inches long (3.5 to 4 cm), red to yellow; seeds 0.08 inch (0.2 cm), black
