Cephalophyllum are a group of 30 or so species of mesemb from southwestern South Africa. The name Cephalophyllum comes from the Greek for "head - leaves". They are a more refined ground cover that Carpobrotus or Malephora, but are a little more fragile. The added benefit is the magnificent flowers.

Cephalophyllum are winter growers, they bloom mostly in winter. In nature they receive little water in summer, but in cultivation they seem to enjoy summer water too and often keep growing. Actually, like many other mesembs in Phoenix very hot and dry summer, watering them is essential to keep them alive..
