True Myrtle, Common Myrtle, Roman Myrtle

Sun Exposure: Full sun to light shade

Origin: Mediterranean basin, known in cultivation only

Growth Habits: Evergreen shrub, or small tree, 5 to 15 feet tall (1.5-4.5 m), 4 to 20 feet spread (1.2-6 m) depending on the variety; elliptic to ovate leaves, strongly scented when crushed, 2 inches long (5cm)

Watering Needs: Little to no water, drought tolerant, needs good drainage, excess watering makes it chlorotic

Propagation: Seeds, semi-hardwood in early summer

The more common variety is 'Compacta' (picture 2), with a tighter, more refined foliage.

Fruiting Habits:
The Myrtus communis bears blue berries, 0.3 to 0.5 inch in diameter (0.7-1.2 cm). They are edible, although not that great tasting.

Culture:
Fertilize monthly during the growing season. Trim in early spring to keep a desired form.
