Recommended Temperature Zone:
sunset: 4-12,14-24
USDA: 7-9, some cultivars are resistant-zone 6 or 5

Heat Tolerance: Light shade in areas with hot dry summers

Sun Exposure: Full sun to light shade

Origin: USA, southeastern Coastal Plain from North Carolina to Texas

Growth Habits: Deciduous tree, 40 to 80 feet tall (12-24 m), 30 to 40 feet in spread (9-12 m); glossy leaves 5 to 11 inches long (12-27 cm), with pubescent cinnamon underside

Watering Needs: Deep watering, likes moist to wet soils

Propagation: Seeds, selected trees can be grafted, cuttings are generally unsuccesful

Blooming Habits:
The Southern Magnolia has large white, fragrant, flowers, 8 to 12 inches in diameter (20-30 cm), in summer.

Fruiting Habits:
Brown conelike structures, 2 to 4 inches long (5-10 cm), with bright red kidney-shaped seeds in autumn.
