The Cast Iron Plant is named for its tolerance for poor growing conditions. It spreads in clump and is a good plant for those very shady spaces. Varieties:
Okame: Deep green leaves with small, very random creamy ochre dots; unusually broad foliage;
Variegata: Deep green leaves striped with irregular white bands. Needs poor soil to keep its stripes.
Cultural Practices: Although extremely tolerant, the Cast Iron Plant does better in light soil rich in organic matters. Responds to feeding in spring and summer. Hose the leaves regularly to keep them dust free.
