Named by Britton and Rose after Miguel Arrojado Lisboa that explored the Brazil for plants at the beginning of the century.
Arrojadoas have tubular flowers coming in flushes in summer. They open during the day, . They are followed by smooth naked berrylike fruit, with white pulp, up to 0.8 inch in diameter (2 cm).
They are mostly tropical species with little frost tolerance.
